You will attend a semester inside a recognized University of Arts, where you will learn theorical and practical aspects of the subject you will choose between:

- design (Art and Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Exhibition Design. Visual Culture and Design History, Technology, Materials and Tools, Theory and Method of Photography are just some of the numerous subjects covered by the design courses);

- fashion (Among the proposed subjects there are Fashion and Costume History, Fabric Design, Fashion Design and Planning, Fashion Accessories and Jewelry Design);

- art (visual arts, such as painting, drawing and photography);

- media and graphic design.

Before starting these courses, students have to attend a language course for a minimum duration of 4 weeks in order to reach the level requested to enter in the Art classes.

The Italian language school and the Academy of Fine Arts share the same campus in the Navigli zone, a meeting place for artists where many cafes and trendy bars are concentrated.

How to Learn Italian As Fast As Possible

Total immersion is the quickest and best way to learn the Italian language. Total immersion is not some software program or audio tape that you listen to on your radio on the way home from work. That way will take a long time to master a language. Total immersion includes traveling to Italy for a long vacation, studying in one of the many language schools located all over Italy, and conversing only in Italian. Many programs include a component which improves the cultural exchange. You will literally eat, breathe, and dream in Italian.

Because many of us do not have the opportunity to spend weeks or months in Italy to learn the language, while touring the ruins, sipping an espresso, or meandering through the museums, there are other ways to learn Italian without leaving your hometown.

Actually you have taken a very important step toward learning Italian when you decided to do so. The most important part of learning Italian is to start studying. Any method you choose will work whether you decide to read an Italian textbook, take a course in Italian at a university or a local language school, do exercises in an Italian workbook, listening to a tape or CD, or even just talking to a native Italian speaker.

Many communities have a local Italian group who get together to chat in Italian. Many of these groups welcome and encourage newcomers and are willing to help them learn the language.

It is a good habit to spend some time every day reading, writing, speaking and listening to Italian. This will help you in becoming accustomed to the language. A minimum of 30 minutes of study per day will do wonders – regardless of what you are studying! Your confidence will build one baby step at a time, your accent will become less apparent, your vocabulary will increase and you’ll be communicating in Italian before you know it. You might even start speaking Italian with your hands.

The Italian Language

Modern Italian, as often happens with many national languages, is in fact a dialect that has succeeded in imposing itself as the proper language of a larger region than the one corresponding to the land where a dialect is spoken. In the case of Italian, the Tuscan dialect, spoken in Florence, Pisa and Siena, has become the dominant dialect.

Interestingly, this is not because of political or demographic reasons as normally happens, but thanks to the cultural prestige it carries due to the fact that it was the language of the famed “Divina Comedia”. This literary work written in the early years of the 14th century was considered the first literary work authored in the “modern language.”

The Tuscan dialect is indeed the one in which renown authors such as Dante Alighieri, Petrarca and Boccaccio wrote. These three authors were considered the most well known Italian Renaissance writers. The economic success and development of the Tuscan region during the late Middle Ages gave the dialect extra weight despite the continued influence of the Venetian dialect.

The Italian languaeg is related to the other two Italo-Dalmatian languages, Sicilian and the now extinct Dalmatian. These three languaegs are part of the Italo-Western familyof Romance languages. Italian is nearest to Latin in terms of vocabulary other Romance languages are closer to Latin in terms of noun declension, verb conjugation, and phonology.

In Italy, all languages spoken as the vernacular other than standard Italian are termed “Italian dialects”. These include various recognized dialects such as Friulian, Neapolitan, Sardinian, Sicilian, and Venetian.

Other dialects are generally not used in the public square and are largely limited to informal conversations. Demographically, the younger generations tend to speak standard Italian almost exclusively though local accents and idioms do continue to be present.

The Italian language is of course spoken mainly in Italy, where it is the national language and is spoken by approximately 63 million people. It also spoken in two cantons (Ticino and Grigioni) of Switzerland where it is also known as an official language.

Italian speaking communities however reach far beyond Italy. Italian speakers are found throughout Europe most notably in England, Belgium, the various republics of the former Yugoslavia, Monaco, Molta and Argentina Others are found Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Chile, United States and Canada.

A substantial community of Italian speakers is also found in Australia. Substantially smaller numbers of speakers in the former Italian colonies of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Lybia.
